Pewne rzeczy nie musz\u0105 \u017cy\u0107 ze sob\u0105 w kompletnej symbiozie, by do siebie pasowa\u0107. Wystarczy, \u017ce s\u0105 obok siebie i daj\u0105 mi rado\u015b\u0107. Metal on the opera stage<\/b><\/p>\n

Despite appearances, aggressive music and symphonic music have a lot in common. Regardless of whether we play classical music or perform in a rock band, the same heart and skills are required,” says Sebastian Jarus, acting manager of the acoustic section of Wroc\u0142aw Opera. He was supposed to be a composer, he became a drummer and if you heard the sounds of harsh metal music in our opera house on Monday afternoon, it was his band Mentally Blind.<\/b><\/p>\n

You combine two worlds – metal music and opera. How do you manage to do that?<\/b><\/p>\n

I’m very good at it because I’m a fan of extreme types of art. I love the sound of orchestras and film music – they give us access to sounds that are full of emotion and even sometimes to almost pathetic, sinister sounds. It’s the same with metal: it also has a certain pathos, powerful sounds. Despite appearances, aggressive music and symphonic music have a lot in common. The levels of difficulty of playing instruments are also similar, regardless of whether we play classical music or perform in a rock band. The same heart and skill are required here.<\/p>\n

And what came first for you: rock or opera?<\/b><\/p>\n

Parallel. When I first started out, I had aspirations of not only creating music, but also recording it. When I was younger, my big dream was to become a film music composer. Of course, I was inspired by the greatest ones, I mean the works of Hans Zimmer, Enio Morricone, Nino Rota… I realise that film music can be considered by many as a pop of classical music – but I appreciate it very much for what a strong emotional transmitter it is – how skilfully it can paint whole landscapes of often extreme feelings. I am a man who prefers strong black and white to shades of grey. Maybe this is the reason for my love of metal and Hans Zimmer’s compositions at the same time.<\/p>\n

Have you tried your hand as a composer?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Yes, on my own, in front of a computer of course. As a child I went to music school, I was in the percussion class – at that time I didn’t know if I wanted to do it, I was looking for my way, and composing came to my mind. In any case, You can still find my compositions on the Internet, including the one I created for a scene from the 2002 film Time Machine. https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=P-VP-FyI9KU<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It already has almost 3 million views on YouTube!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I used ready-made digital tools to create it – hiring an orchestra and making such a recording is a gigantic cost, which I wouldn’t be able to bear even today, but this way I could write music with the help of an orchestra sound bank! It brought me a lot of fun and was also a way to express my emotions. Film music is a brilliant tool for that – after all, it’s usually the music that makes us cry, for example in war films, not the fact that someone is dying. And the effect would be almost comical if we put, for example, techno in such a scene. A lot depends on the music, and if it’s good, it will defend itself, even without the film. I have to admit, I’m not a big fan of hip-hop, but when I hear a song that appeals to me, I don’t hesitate to praise it and appreciate it. And that’s a lot of challenge with this genre, because I’ve never paid much attention to what the artists are singing or rapping about. For me, a singer should first and foremost treat himself as an instrument.<\/p>\n


\nThis means that your emotional language is focused on sound rather than words …<\/b><\/p>\n

That’s right, and I think that’s also what attracted me to work at Wroc\u0142aw Opera – after all, it’s one of the few places within my reach where I can have contact with an orchestra. I’ve been working here for six years now, I’m a sound engineer, and after work – playing in the band Mentally Blind – I’m also improving as a musician and producer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I see that you have the ability – nomen omen – to compose your life’s activities so that they complement each other. Let us now turn to the subject of your band. Is there something more behind its name than the fact that the name just sounds good to you?<\/b><\/p>\n

I might as well ask, what do the names Metallica or Iron Maiden mean? They also, above all, sound good! And so it is with Mentally Blind. The four of us play: me on drums, our vocalist Kamil, guitarist Filip and bassist Marcin. In 2021 we released our first full-length album Stage zero – let’s face it, this is aggressive music, with heavy riffs, but we don’t avoid ambient motifs, melody and space.<\/p>\n


\nCan it be said of you that you are tough on the outside, soft on the inside?<\/b><\/p>\n

I would say it’s the opposite! In my opinion we seem to be pretty good boys (laughs).<\/p>\n

So what do your mums think about you playing this kind of music?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

I was once asked why I play metal, there’s no money to be made from it… but I don’t play for the money, rather for pleasure. If I wanted to make money I would play disco polo. As Mentally Blind we have nothing from this band – nothing but meetings with the audience, good fun, the feeling of being together. In my opinion, this “nothing” is quite a lot! Because of the pandemic the number of our concerts was almost zero and it was hard to find a free date. But miracles did happen, on Monday night in Liverpool in Wroclaw we managed to gather almost 200 people.<\/p>\n

You recently recorded a music video at the Wroc\u0142aw Opera House. Usually these boards and stilettos listen to arias and orchestral music, but now metal. How did our scene turn out?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Fantastic! That’s why we wanted to record here, not for the first time. Two years ago, the opera stage was the setting for the video for One for no one<\/i> (link below text) <\/em>– now we’re back with The Loop<\/i>. We are fans of simplicity, so we chose a simple set design, using a trapdoor – it did a great job – and with the help of Kamil Jach, our official lighting designer, we created beautiful lighting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Is opera inspiring to you in any way? Does it influence your creative work?<\/b><\/p>\n

These are two completely different worlds for me, we don’t consciously refer to them, but as we know, musical genres intermingle and influence each other. Certain things don’t have to live together in complete symbiosis to fit together. It is enough if they are next to each other and they give me joy. As much as I love playing the drums, I also love producing sound at the Wroc\u0142aw Opera House.<\/p>\n
