RECENZJE “MANON” – BRAWA DLA WSZYSTKICH! 👏👏👏

Reżyserska KONCEPCJA Waldemara Zawodzińskiego w połączeniu ze znakomitą, gwiazdorską obsadą sprawiły, że powrót MANON nie mógł się nie udać
Powieść Jules’a Masseneta o destrukcyjnej miłości nie gościła na polskich scenach od ponad 40 lat, więc już sama zapowiedź wystawienia Manon w Operze Wrocławskiej wzbudziła duże zainteresowanie. Na świecie przyćmiła ją inna interpretacja tej samej historii – Manon Lescaut Giacoma Pucciniego, którą we współczesnej odsłonie w reżyserii Mariusza Trelińskiego można było oglądać na deskach Opery Narodowej i w brukselskiej La Monnaie. Niemniej nieznane polskim słuchaczom dzieło Masseneta mogło okazać się strzałem w dziesiątkę lub fiaskiem; opierając się na koncepcji Theodora W. Adom a fety-szyzacji muzyki, wysuwam twierdzenie, że słuchacz najchętniej odbiera to, co zna i lubi. Nie bez powodu stały repertuar operowy w Polsce ufundowany jest na największych klasykach. Zwrot w stronę zapomnianej historii był jednak we Wrocławiu wyjątkowo udany i cieszy mnie, że opowieść o Manon powróciła do łask. Libretto (autorstwa Henriego Meilhaca i Philippe’a Gille) w operze Masseneta jest najbliższe pierwowzorowi, XVIII-wiecznej powieści Historia kawalera des Grieux i Manon Lescaut Abbe Prevosta. Zawiera ona uniwersalne motywy destrukcyjnej miłości, charakteryzuje ją jednak głębia rysu psychologicznego postaci i ich emocji. Mimo że mamy do czynienia z archetypową femme fatale, jej działań nie można ocenić jednoznacznie; jest w tej historii klasyczne moralizatorstwo wyrażone przez upokarzającą śmierć Manon, ale jako widzowie możemy też jej współczuć, a nawet zrozumieć jej decyzje. We wrocławskiej interpretacji Simony Mihai zabrakło mi jednak drapieżności i wyrachowania głównej bohaterki, która jako zaledwie 16-latka miota się między wyborem: miłość czy status społeczny i bogactwo. Są w niej niezaspokojona żądza posiadania wszystkiego, niechęć do rezygnowania z jednej ścieżki na rzecz drugiej, rozterki i subtelne rozedrgania, ale artystka, choć pięknie operująca dramaturgią głosu, nie oddała w pełni charakteru tej skomplikowanej postaci. Najbardziej poruszające okazało się jej dolce i romantyczne duety z Charlesem Castronovo. Amerykański tenor jako Des Grieux debiutował 10 lat temu w Theatre du Capitole w Tuluzie. We Wrocławiu doskonale było słychać jego doświadczenie, z ekspresją wyśpiewywał porywy serca młodego kawalera – technicznym popisom nie ustępowały na krok charyzma sceniczna i umiejętności aktorskie. Mohai schodziła na dalszy plan i wypadała przy nim nieco jednowymiaro-wo. Wspinali się jednak na wyżyny swoich możliwości; szczególnie aria Des Grieux Je suis seul!… Ah! fuyez, douce images z trzeciego aktu wybrzmiała wyjątkowo efektownie, ukazując targające postacią emocje. W duecie N’est-ce plus ma main z tego samego aktu, w którym Manon błaga kochanka o wybaczenie, śpiewaczka zrównała się poziomem z Castronovo, operując niesły-szaną wcześniej, pełną wyrazu głębią swego głosu. Z międzynarodowymi gwiazdami bez trudu konkurował fantastyczny Szymon Mechliński, wcielający się w rolę Lescauta. Nie było to dla mnie zaskoczeniem – już kilkakrotnie widziałam go na scenie Opery Wrocławskiej. Charakterystyczna, nasycona, ciemna barwa jego barytonu i znakomita gra aktorska to cechy, których można się spodziewać po tym artyście. Chociaż wcielił się w postać drugoplanową, dorównywał głównym bohaterom i przykuwał uwagę w każdym wejściu. Waldemar Zawodziński, reżyser i scenograf spektaklu, zdecydował się na osadzenie akcji w XIX-wiecznej Francji (choć nie zabrakło puszczonego do publiczności oczka i subtelnie wplecionych nawiązań współczesnych). Zastosował ideę teatru w teatrze, co sprawdziło się bardzo dobrze – bez niepotrzebnego przekombinowania, bez natłoku dodatkowych znaczeń, a jednak pozostawiało furtkę na otwartą interpretację dzieła. Mimo że sam reżyser mówi o strojach „stylizowanych” na historyczne i tym usprawiedliwia pewne niedociągnięcia, kostiumowo można się było wykazać większą starannością. Szczególnie niepasująca wizualnie do konwencji scena baletowa pozostawiała widza w konsternacji. Wynagrodziła to Janina Niesobska, której choreografia znakomicie łączyła prostotę z wyrazistą koncepcją plastyczną ruchu. Najbardziej interesujący pod tym względem okazał się akt czwarty, w kasynie. Zatrzymania postaci w dynamicznych pozach, dzięki którym same stawały się elementem scenografii, a potem nagłe dynamiczne zmiany świetnie oddały ferwor i chaos miejsca hazardu. Na wspomnienie zasługuje również dyrygent Bassem Akiki. Prowadził orkiestrę z lekkością, co słychać było już w pierwszych taktach uwertury. Reżyser zgrabnie połączył elementy, których brakowało mi od jakiegoś czasu w polskich teatrach operowych – klasykę, spójność wizji, a przy tym jej barwność. Bezbłędne zrozumienie przestrzeni, symetria i proste zabiegi stworzyły wyjątkową całość (co nie jest łatwe przy takiej liczbie scen zbiorowych). Ta koncepcja reżyserska w połączeniu z gwiazdorską obsadą sprawiły, że powrót Manon nie mógł się nie udać.

Pierwszy raz od dawna pojawiła się na wrocławskiej scenie realizacja goszczącego tu niegdy
ś częściej Waldemara Zawodzińskiego ze swoim teamem, czyli Janiną Niesobską (choreografia) i Marią Balcerek (kostiumy). Wiadomo więc było, że pomysł będzie dopracowany i barwny. I jest, dość zaskakujący: po podniesieniu kurtyny widzimy jakby odbicie widowni opery, z tymi samymi balkonami i wystrojem. Wszystko jest więc jakby wzięte w dodatkowy nawias. By wprowadzić na scenę kolejne elementy lub je z niej wyprowadzić, podnosi się część tej widowni i wjeżdża dyliżans, meble, konfesjonał (gdy ukochany Manon, kawaler des Grieux, próbuje o niej zapomnieć, przywdziewając szaty księdza) czy więźniarka (przewożąca Manon). Historia Antoine’a Prevosta o prostej, pragnącej korzystać ze świata i jego bogactw, ale też czułej dziewczynie i zakochanym w niej bez pamięci kawalerze zainspirowała niejednego twórcę operowego (żeby wspomnieć choćby Daniela Aubera i Giacomo Pucciniego) i filmowego; dla Masseneta była pierwszą, którą zdobył powodzenie. Popularne na świecie, w Polsce dzieło nie było grane od 1979 r., dobrze więc, że je przypomniano. W premierowej obsadzie wyróżnił się zwłaszcza Charles Castronovo, gwiazdor Met, znakomity i głosowo, i aktorsko. Spektakl wraca w listopadzie i nie wiadomo jeszcze, kto wówczas zaśpiewa rolę des Grieux, ale miejscowa obsada pozostałych ról wygląda zachęcająco.

GORĄCZKA ZŁOTA I CZERWIENI
MONIKA JAZOWNIK
Miłość, zdrada, hazard, cierpienie – a wszystko to przez młodą i uroczą Manon. Sekretem jej sukcesu jest uroda. Historia utkana na motywach dzieła osiemnastowiecznego pisarza – księdza Antoine’a François Prévosta, która bez reszty zachwyciła Jules’a Masseneta, nie należy w Polsce do repertuarowych hitów operowych.
Ostatni raz dzieło wystawiane było w kraju ponad 40 lat temu. Na afisze Opery Wrocławskiej „Manon” wróciła po 122 latach na zakończenie sezonu artystycznego 2021/2022. Opowieść Masseneta nie jest prosta. Najtrudniej chyba przedstawia się historie ponadczasowe, historie „wędrowne”, a do takich przecież należy „Manon”. Dzieło Jules’a Masseneta tworzą ponadto różne rodzaje tkanek, których misterne sploty wymykają się jednoznacznościom. Waldemar Zawodziński (reżyseria, scenografia, reżyseria świateł) wraz z Marią Balcerek (kostiumy), Janiną Niesobską (choreografia) oraz Bassemem Akikim zbudowali spektakl barwny, pełen nieoczywistości, być może do wielokrotnego obejrzenia Akcja umieszczona została w teatrze, do złudzenia zresztą przypominającym wnętrze Opery Wrocławskiej, kostiumy zaś stylistyką odwołują się do początku XX w. Reżyser nie tyle więc przenosi widza do czasów minionych, ile teatralizuje rzeczywistość przedstawioną. Pomysł ten fenomenalnie koresponduje z muzyczną warstwą dzieła, w którym przecież pobrzmiewają na prawach pastiszu dawne gawoty i menuety. Już od pierwszych chwil, kiedy pojawia się Manon (Simona Mihai), wiadomo, że z tą dziewczyną będą kłopoty… Niby skromne dziewczę w grzecznej sukni (w końcu przeznaczono ją do zakonu), ale coś za ładne, za figlarne, no i z wpisanym w całą jej postać pożądaniem wielkiego świata, który akurat tu, w gospodzie Amiens, jest zaledwie półświatkiem. Manon z zazdrością i fascynacją spogląda na wpół rozebrane kokoty – panny Poussette (Canan Kalkir), Javotte (Aleksandra Opała) i Rosette (Dorota Dutkowska). Otwarta jest też na nowe znajomości, szczególnie te męskie. Na szczęście w pobliżu znajduje się czujny Lescaut (Szymon Mechliński). I jemu niełatwo jest okiełznać temperament kuzynki. Z Manon wylewa się wręcz podekscytowanie i oszołomienie. Wszystkie te gorące emocje zbiera przepiękna i kapryśna zarazem aria „Je suis encor tout étourdie”. Wymaga ona ogromnych umiejętności technicznych, a Simona Mihai niewątpliwie je posiada. W udany sposób artystka poprowadziła zadyszane i rozchichotane z podekscytowania frazy. Zabrakło mi jednak pewnej rozżarzonej zachłanności i zachwytu, które Manon opisują. Uśmiechnęłam się za to do trzech „Gracji”. Wzbudziły moją sympatię już wtedy, gdy wytaczały się z dyliżansu. Ich „nadobność” kurtyzan była bezpretensjonalnie przekonująca. Śpiewaczki burleskowo-wyrazistą kreską poprowadziły swoje postaci. Szymon Mechliński obdarzył natomiast swego Lescauta zawadiackim rysem, naznaczył sympatyczną nicponiowatością. W atmosferę drugiego aktu miłosną nutą wprowadziła słuchaczy orkiestra pod batutą maestro Akikiego. Massenet jest rzeczywiście mistrzem motywów przewodnich, które genialnie oddają różnorodność emocjonalnych stanów bohaterów. Zasłuchałam się w orkiestrowy dialog głównych postaci – filuternych przekomarzanek skrzypiec (Manon) i niskich, „zauroczonych” smyczków (Des Grieux). Trzeba przyznać, że Simona Mihai i Charles Castronovo stworzyli zgrany duet. Artyści w naturalny sposób wyczuwają swoją sceniczną i muzyczną pulsację, dlatego ich wyśpiewana czarodziejska potęga zaklęcia miłosnego brzmiała sugestywnie. Przyznam, że od drugiego aktu moja sympatia do Manon znacznie spadła, i tak już zostało. Poczytuję to Simonie Mihai za walor, która przekonująco potrafiła przekazać prawdziwe oblicze swojej bohaterki jako romantycznej, lecz wyrachowanej kochanki. Kiedy des Grieux w dźwiękach „En fermant les yeux” rozpływa się marzycielsko na myśl o wspólnym domku w lesie, Manon ma już wypisaną na twarzy obojętność. Na poziomie scenicznego znakowania zwalnia ruchy, jest jak porcelanowa laleczka. W kolejnym akcie scena pustoszeje, znika stolik i kanapa igraszek, za to triumfalnie wjeżdża posąg młodzieńca. Przyznam, że nie do końca rozumiem tę figurę. Może to znak lepszego świata, który wybrała Manon, owej przepustki do wolności… Za chwilę wokół statuy zrobi się tłumnie, bo to promenada w centrum Paryża, gdzie trwa wielka feta. I tu reżyser Waldemar Zawodziński przypomina nam, że oglądamy teatralne „dzianie się”. Promenadowi spacerowicze poruszają się w zwolnionym tempie na znak tego, że nie jest istotne, kim są, co myślą i czują. To zaledwie figury, tło dla Manon. Ona, w czerwonej sukni, jest teraz królową życia. Przyznam, że Simona Mihai zgrabnie wyśpiewała błyszczące szczęście kobiety sukcesu. Gawot wymagający zwinności głosu, bogaty w trudne koloratury, zabrzmiał promiennie i gibko. Oczy wszystkich zwrócone są nieustannie na Manon, która w pewnym momencie markotnieje. Dowiaduje się bowiem, że jej ukochany chce związać swoją przyszłość ze stanem kapłańskim. Dziewczyna wyraźnie traci rezon. Nawet baletowe przedstawienie przygotowane specjalnie dla niej przez kochanka Guillota nie robi na niej specjalnego wrażenia. Cieszy natomiast widza. Na poziomie tekstu mamy bowiem zaserwowany pyszny teatr w teatrze – pastiszem podszyty osiemnastowieczny menuet. Czerwone postacie tańczą, a raczej wiją się w groteskowych pozach, ożywa też posąg. Jego ruchy również niosą niepokój. W planie przedstawienia ów taniec to prawdopodobnie projekcja dręczących Manon uczuć i myśli. Druga odsłona trzeciego aktu przenosi akcję do kościoła. Des Grieux otoczony jest wianuszkiem panien nadobnych, wielbicielek kazań młodego księdza. Tu, w kościele, odniósł już sukces. Des Grieux, uwielbiany przez parafianki, które ze czcią całują rąbek jego sutanny, skrywa uwierającą tajemnicę, ranę zadaną mu przez Manon. Charles Castronovo mistrzowsko potrafi wyrazić dramat porzuconego mężczyzny szukającego pocieszenia, a raczej ucieczki w Bogu. Z arii „Je suis seul” Castronovo uczynił prawdziwą introspektywną refleksję człowieka z niepoukładanym światem wewnętrznym. Kiedy w kościele pojawia się ukochana, przestrzeń tych dwojga wypełnia mocno czerwone światło. Manon jest skruszona, lecz cały czas świadoma swojej czynnej władzy nad byłym kochankiem. Jej wielobarwne uwodzenie reżyser zaplanował tak, by to panowanie podkreślić. Manon w krwistoczerwonej sukni stoi nad des Grieux, a jego ręce zawieszone są na klęczniku tak, jakby ciało było rozpostarte na ramionach krzyża. Ta scena w sugestywny sposób ujawnia całą ofiarę des Grieux. Manon – mistyczka manipulacji całuje kochanka, a des Grieux „nawraca się” na drogę namiętności. Akt czwarty przenosi akcję do kasyna. Wszystko błyszczy i ocieka złotem – złote są tancerki ze złotymi łańcuszkami na sutkach, złote maski skrywają twarze dżentelmenów-graczy. Dość powiedzieć, że wnętrze Opery Wrocławskiej, jej widownia na powierzchni jednego hektara pokryta jest 24- karatowym złotem! W powietrzu wisi amok, ale i pustka. Zebrani w hotelu Transylwania są jakby znieczuleni, obecni, ale nieobecni, blisko im do manekinów. Hazard panoszy się i sączy swój jad, a Manon noszona przez tancerzy na rękach jest w swoim żywiole. W towarzystwie trzech Gracji wyśpiewuje „pean” na cześć złota. Nic nie pomogła wizyta ojca des Grieux (Aleksander Zuchowicz), który ze stanowczością próbuje przekazać swoje „memento” – „przybywam wydobyć cię z upadku”. Przestrzeń pustoszeje. To scena zintensyfikowanego napięcia, gdzie szaroniebieska, gęsta mgła jakoś szczególnie porusza emocje. Ostatni akt to obraz nędzy i rozpaczy. Wóz z więźniarkami toczy się smętnie, wśród nich wycieńczona Manon. Dla niej nie ma już ratunku. Ostatnim tchnieniem Manon prosi kochanka o wybaczenie. Końcowy duet miłosny Simona Mihai i Charles Castronovo wyśpiewali z rozdzierającym żarem. Pozostawili moje emocje w poruszeniu. Czy dziełem operowym Jules’a Masseneta „Manon” można się ekscytować? Massenetowskie arie mają w sobie niezwykłą plastyczność frazowania, każde słowo ma muzyczną giętkość. Z pewnością opera obfituje w wiele fraz czule delikatnych, takich w sam raz do zasłuchania się, motywów, które moje ucho skłonne jest włączyć do kolekcji „lubię to”. A główna bohaterka – czy mnie zafascynowała i porwała swoją historią? Wspomniałam wcześniej, że tytułowej postaci nie polubiłam. Nie przekonuje mnie zwykle kreślona sylwetka Manon jako kobiety rozdartej, bardzo skomplikowanej, przez to fascynującej. Bzdura! Co takiego oprócz seksapilu ma ona do zaoferowania? Jej rozterki nie posiadają natury moralnej, ona jest po prostu targana wichrami namiętności. I kolejne pytanie – czy Manon pragnie b y ć faktycznie wolna (i co to właściwie znaczy), czy pragnie m i e ć zapewnione wszelkie uciechy dla zaspokojenia swej kapryśnej i przewrotnej natury? W dziele Masseneta imię Manon odmieniane jest przez wszystkie przypadki, na scenie spędza ona 95 procent czasu przedstawienia. Jednak to nie Manon mnie fascynuje, tylko des Grieux – jego poświęcenie, wielkoduszność, bycie do końca, pomimo zafundowanej mu okrutnej „szkoły uczuć”. A pozostali mężczyźni w tej opowieści? Ech, szkoda gadać…

FUZJA HORYZONTÓW W OPERZE WROCŁAWSKIEJ

Opera Wrocławska wieńczy sezon bardzo udanym przedstawieniem. Manon Jules’a Masseneta w inscenizacji Waldemara Zawodzińskiego to spektakl świetnie pomyślany i perfekcyjnie zrealizowany.
Zawodziński, jeden z najciekawszych w Polsce twórców teatru operowego, nie tylko reżyseruje, ale też sam projektuje scenografię i światła. Jest gruntownie wykształcony. Najpierw ukończył Akademię Sztuk Pięknych w Łodzi, potem reżyserię w krakowskiej szkole teatralnej, zwanej dziś dumnie akademią. Jego inscenizacje wyróżniają się mocną stroną wizualną, płynnym montażem scen i dobrym aktorstwem.Przede wszystkim jednak Zawodziński czyta ze zrozumieniem tekst libretta i z uwagą studiuje partyturę. Nie próbuje udziwniać czy na siłę uwspółcześniać klasycznych oper. Stara się raczej ujawnić ich uniwersalne wartości i pomóc publiczności w żywym odbiorze dawnych arcydzieł.Wystawienie opery Manon Masseneta 136 lat po paryskiej prapremierze to duże wyzwanie dla współczesnego inscenizatora. Romantyczna opera liryczna apeluje raczej do emocji niż rozumu. Logika zdarzeń bywa drugorzędna. Akcja opery Manon przebiega mniej więcej tak:Dziewczyna ma szesnaście lat, chłopak jest niewiele starszy. Spotykają się przypadkiem na stacji dyliżansów. Uboga rodzina wysyła dziewczynę do klasztoru. On studiuje filozofię. Zakochują się w sobie od pierwszego wrażenia, jak to nastolatki. Uciekają do Paryża. W Paryżu żyją biednie. On chce się żenić i marzy o zamieszkaniu w białym domku, ona myśli tylko o zabawie i życiu w luksusach. Kiedy zamożny ojciec porywa chłopaka, dziewczyna nie oponuje. U boku nowego kochanka z radością rzuca się w wir rozkosznego życia paryskiej arystokracji. Mijają cztery lata. Chłopak, choć porzucony, nie potrafi zapomnieć wielkiej miłości. Z rozpaczy zostaje księdzem. Wygłasza porywające kazania. Jest sławny i uwielbiany przez parafianki. Dziewczyna, teraz już doświadczona dwudziestolatka, na wieść o nowej karierze swego byłego kochanka uświadamia sobie, że jest on miłością jej życia. Uwodzi go raz jeszcze. On ulega, a ona trwoni jego majątek i zmusza go do gry w karty, co oczywiście prowadzi do tragicznego finału.Inscenizatorzy często przenoszą Manon z końca XIX wieku w czasy mniej lub bardziej sobie współczesne. Vincent Paterson umieścił akcję w powojennym Paryżu (Berlin 2007), Olivier Py w dzielnicy burdeli (Genewa 2016), David Bösch we współczesnych mieszkaniach (Hamburg 2021). Zawodziński proponuje własne, oryginalne rozwiązanie, zaskakująco nośne plastycznie.

We Wrocławiu podczas uwertury bordowa kurtyna odsłania na scenie balkony widowni z XIX-wiecznego teatru. Dzisiejsza publiczność, usadowiona na balkonach bardzo podobnej przestrzeni Opery Wrocławskiej, ogląda przedstawienie premierowe w paryskim teatrze. Oryginalna publiczność jednak „wyparowała” z balkonów na scenie. Są puste, choć niekiedy zapalają się w nich światełka, a w czwartym akcie dolne balkony zamieszkuje na krótko chór.

Przedstawienie grane jest pomiędzy dwoma światami, jak w „fuzji horyzontów” niemieckiego filozofa Hansa Georga Gadamera: każda udana próba interpretacji tekstu czy performansu klasycznego prowadzi do stopienia się dwóch horyzontów: historycznego i współczesnego. Wierna rekonstrukcja prapremiery jest przecież niemożliwa, a wszelkie próby traktowania klasyki jako dzieła wyrażającego wyłącznie współczesność są anachroniczne i fałszywe.

Umieszczenie inscenizacji poza czasem sygnalizuje dystans. Jesteśmy wszak w operze. To sanktuarium iluzji i umowności, zona dla osób z wyobraźnią. W pierwszym akcie na scenie stoi olbrzymi dyliżans bez koni. Ten bardzo pojemny znak teatralny pomysłowo organizuje działania aktorów. Głównym tematem tego aktu są podróże, zamierzone i niezamierzone. Dyliżans stoi nieruchomo i przez to staje się wieloznaczną metaforą losu ludzkiego.

Wehikuł pojawia się też w ostatnim akcie. Tym razem jest to drewniany wóz policyjny wywożący skazańców do kolonii w Luizjanie. Z okien zwisają ludzkie wraki. To gorzki komentarz do aktu pierwszego, wypełnionego młodzieńczym wigorem i nadziejami.

Zawodziński maluje światłem piękne obrazy sceniczne. Prosta zmiana koloru oświetlenia zamienia teatralne balkony w świątynię, a nawet ołtarz. Świetnie komponowane są sceny zbiorowe. Każda osoba w chórze wykonuje precyzyjne zadanie. Polifonia ruchów buduje znakomite konteksty do emocjonalnych arii solistów i tworzy żywe światy.

Janina Niesobska, wybitna choreografka ze wspaniałym życiorysem artystycznym, nie tylko dobrze dogaduje się z reżyserem, ale nade wszystko słyszy muzykę Masseneta. Zachowania chórzystów zdają się emanować z dźwięków i rytmów granych przez orkiestrę. Choreografia baletu w trzecim akcie jest wręcz porywająca. Tancerze Opery Wrocławskiej nigdy nie zawodzą. To zespół baletowy klasy europejskiej.

Znakomite kostiumy Marii Balcerek idealnie współtworzą komponowane przez Zawodzińskiego obrazy sceniczne. Balcerek doskonale operuje kolorem. Projektuje ubiory, które świetnie funkcjonują w scenach grupowych i bardzo ułatwiają śledzenie zawiłej chwilami akcji, a w scenach baletu efektownie wzmacniają ekspresję ciał tancerzy.

Sukces opery zależy oczywiście od solistów. W spektaklu sobotnim rolę tytułowej bohaterki, Manon Lescaut śpiewała Simona Mihai, brytyjska sopranistka urodzona w Bukareszcie. W pierwszym akcie stworzyła intrygujący portret „nastolatki” jako stanu umysłu.

Partia Manon jest wyjątkowo trudna. W każdym z pięciu aktów bohaterka ma inną tożsamość. Jest naiwną nastolatką, energiczną kokietką, kobietę upadłą, romantyczną divą, wielką tragiczką. Każda z tych postaci ustanawia swą aktualną tożsamość namiętną arią. Trochę żal, że Simona Mihai, wybitna śpiewaczka, w finale nie zaryzykowała stworzenia pogłębionego portretu tragicznej femme fatale, ale ukryła się za perfekcyjną formą muzyczną i wystylizowanymi pozami.

Gwiazdą wieczoru był amerykański tenor liryczny Charles Castronovo, znany już we Wrocławiu z Opowieści Hoffmanna Offenbacha (2021). Ma mocny głos o urzekającej barwie. Jako Le Chevalier des Grieux, nieszczęśliwy kochanek Manon, wzbudzał na widowni Opery Wrocławskiej entuzjastyczne reakcje. Castronovo, utalentowany aktor, uwiarygodniał romans pomiędzy Kawalerem i Manon. Spektakularnie cierpiał miłosne katusze.

Drugim bohaterem wieczoru był Szymon Mechliński w roli Lescaux, kuzyna Manon. Ma wspaniały głos i, podobnie jak Castronovo, duży talent aktorski. Stworzył wstrząsające studium człowieka zdemoralizowanego, hazardzisty i alkoholika.

Grzegorz Szostak uwiarygodnił natomiast postać ojca Kawalera des Grieux. Obdarzony pięknym basem i naturalną charyzmą, Szostak zbudował wielowymiarowy portret arystokraty zatroskanego o losy syna.

Canan Kalkir w roli Poussette po raz kolejny dowiodła, że dysponuje cudownym głosem o unikalnej barwie. Simona Mihai zadebiutowała przed laty w operze Manon właśnie jako Poussette. Może to dobry znak i doczekamy się niebawem inscenizacji z Kalkir w roli głównej.

Osobnego komentarza wymaga świetna orkiestra pod batutą Bassema Akiki, jednego z trójcy dyrektorów Opery Wrocławskiej. Akiki zradykalizował emocjonalny przekaz opery. Sceny kulminacyjne wbijały w fotel niemal jak na koncercie zespołu Napalm Death. Potężny wolumen silnie poruszał, ale chwilami też zagłuszał lirykę tej sławnej przecież „opery lirycznej”. Z podziwem i empatią myślałem o muzykach, zamkniętych w ciasnym orkiestrionie. Błyskające cekiny na marynarce dyrygenta nawet mnie rozpraszały.

Waldemar Zawodziński uczynił z Manon fascynujące i wysmakowane widowisko. Warto się zanurzyć w tym świecie poza czasem, żeby doświadczyć fuzji horyzontów i poczuć zadziwiającą potęgę emocjonalną opery romantycznej.

Opera Wrocławska kończy sezon prezentując nie widzianą na polskich scenach od ponad czterdziestu lat „Manon” Masseneta. Do roli kawalera des Grieux udało się zaprosić artystę, który od lat nie schodzi ze szczytu operowego Olimpu – Charlesa Castronovo. Amerykański tenor odwiedził Wrocław już po raz kolejny, wcześniej brał udział w koncertach inaugurujących sezon 2020/21 oraz transmitowanych online w trakcie pandemii „Opowieściach Hoffmanna” Offenbacha. Tym razem przyjechał bez małżonki, rosyjskiej sopranistki Ekateriny Siuriny, a w tytułowej roli zastąpiła ją pochodząca z Rumunii Simona Mihai.
To, że we Wrocławiu można zobaczyć artystów z takim dorobkiem jak Charles Castronovo, Aleksandra Kurzak, która zaśpiewała jesienią w „Wolnym strzelcu”, Ambrogio Maestri i Lianna Haroutounian, których pamiętamy z „Toski” czy występująca w „Madamie Butterfly” Kristine Opolais, to niewątpliwa zasługa Mariusza Kwietnia, który jako dyrektor artystyczny zabiega o śpiewaków najwyższej klasy. W przyszłym sezonie w stolicy Dolnego Śląska zawitają z kolei m.in. Erwin Schrott, Marina Rebeka czy podbijająca ostatnio światowe sceny Ewa Płonka. Warszawa może tylko zazdrościć 🙂 Mam tu na myśli warszawską publiczność, bo wydaje się, że dla decydentów Opery Narodowej obsady spektakli mają drugorzędne, jeśli nie trzeciorzędne znaczenie.
„Manon” to opowieść o namiętnej i tragicznej miłości. Kawaler des Grieux zakochuje się w przypadkowo napotkanej Manon Lescaut, którą rodzina chce oddać do klasztoru. Wspólnie uciekają do Paryża, gdzie prowadzą zwyczajne życie. Dziewczyna przedkłada jednak materialny status nad osobiste szczęście i wiąże się ze starszymi panami z wyższych sfer. Ponowne spotkanie byłych kochanków uruchamia lawinę niefortunnych zdarzeń. Des Grieux wybacza Manon i rezygnuje ze święceń kapłańskich, które skłonny był przyjąć by zapomnieć o miłosnym zawodzie. Żeby zdobyć pieniądze na życie na poziomie do którego przyzwyczajona jest dziewczyna, decyduje się spróbować szczęścia w kartach, a po wygranej oskarżony jest o oszustwo. Dzięki interwencji ojca des Grieux wydostaje się z aresztu, jednak Manon zostaje skazana na deportację do Ameryki. Gdy kawaler wraz z kuzynem dziewczyny przybywają jej na pomoc, okazuje się, że ratunek nadchodzi zbyt późno i Manon umiera w ramionach ukochanego.
Wrocławska inscenizacja w reżyserii Waldemara Zawodzińskiego opiera się na konwencji „teatru w teatrze”, jednak dekoracje w postaci odwzorowania widowni Opery Wrocławskiej praktycznie nie są wykorzystane w przebiegu akcji scenicznej. Bogata scenografia i kostiumy, a także intensywne oświetlenie sprawiają momentami wrażenie przeładowania niewielkiej sceny teatru.
Premierowy spektakl był jednak niezwykle satysfakcjonujący pod względem muzycznym. Charles Castronovo z niezwykłą żarliwością i zaangażowaniem wcielił się w postać kawalera des Grieux. Widać, że jest to artysta, który ma doskonale przygotowaną koncepcję postaci i świetnie czuje się w repertuarze francuskim. Amerykański śpiewak ma urodziwy, ciemny, niemal barytonowy głos, przepięknie również prowadzi frazę.
Simona Mihai jako tytułowa Manon również starała się oddać emocje bohaterki, polegające na rozdarciu między pragnieniem bycia kochaną przez kawalera des Grieux, a usilnym pragnieniem niezależności, przepychu i bogactwa. Bardzo dobrze wypadł Szymon Mechliński w roli kuzyna głównej bohaterki – Lescauta. Jest to lekkoduch, który wraz z kolegami z wojska pragnie wydawać pieniądze na zabawę i kobiety, do czego wykorzystuje pozycję Manon w wielkim świecie. Wyraziste były również postaci drugoplanowe – Grzegorz Szostak jako hrabia des Grieux, Aleksander Zuchowicz w roli Guillota de Morfontaine’a czy Sergii Borzov jako de Bretigny.
Prowadzący orkiestrę Bassem Akiki uważnie akcentował szczegóły partytury, nie zapominając o namiętnościach i emocjach.

Manon’s insatiable desires

Waldemar Zawodzinski’s directorial concept combined with a magnificent star-studded cast meant that the return of Manon could not fail.

Jules Massenet’s tale of destructive love has not been performed on Polish stages for more than 40 years, so the announcement of the production of Manon at the Wrocław Opera House already aroused great interest. It was overshadowed in the world by another interpretation of the same story – Giacomo Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, in which its contemporary version directed by Mariusz Treliński could be seen at the National Opera and La Monnaie in Brussels. 

Nevertheless, Massenet’s work, mostly unknown to Polish listeners, may have been a hit or miss; based on Theodor W. Adorno’s concept of the fetishisation of music, I put forward the claim that the listener most likely perceives, what he or she knows and likes. It is not without reason that the regular opera repertoire in Poland is founded on the greatest classics. The return to forgotten history, however, has been exceptionally successful in Wrocław, and I am delighted that the story of Manon has returned to favour.

The libretto (by Henri Meilhac and Philippe Gille) in Massenet’s opera is closest to the original, the 18th-century novel The Story of the Chevalier des Grieux and Manon Lescaut by Abbé Prévost. It contains universal themes of destructive love, but is characterised by the depth of the psychological features of the characters and their emotions. Although we are dealing with an archetypal femme fatale, her actions cannot be judged unequivocally; there is a classic moralism in the story expressed by Manon’s humiliating death, but as an audience we can also sympathise with her and even understand her decisions. 

In Simona Mihai’s interpretation in Wrocław, however, I missed the predation and calculating nature of the main character who, as a mere 16-year-old, flits between the choice of love or social status and wealth. There is an unquenchable lust to have it all, an unwillingness to give up one path for another, dilemmas and subtle jitteriness, but the artist, although beautifully handling the drama of her voice, did not fully convey the character of this complex character. Her dolce and romantic duets with Charles Castronovo proved most moving.

In the duet N’est-ce plus ma main from the same act, in which Manon begs her lover’s forgiveness, the singer equaled Castronovo’s level, operating a previously unheard of expressive depth to her voice. The international stars were easily competed with by the fantastic Szymon Mechlinski, playing the role of Lescaut. This came as no surprise to me – I had already seen him on the stage of Wrocław Opera several times. The distinctive, saturated, dark timbre of his baritone and his outstanding acting are qualities one would expect from this artist. Although he played a supporting character, he matched the main characters and commanded attention in every entrance.

Waldemar Zawodziński, the show’s director and stage designer, decided to set the action in the 19th century in France (although there was a wink at the audience and subtle contemporary references woven in). He applied the idea of theatre within theatre, which worked very well – without unnecessary fiddling, without a flurry of additional meanings, and yet left the door open for an open interpretation of the work. Although the director himself speaks of the costumes being “stylised” to look historical and thus justifies some shortcomings, the costuming could have shown more care. The ballet scene, in particular, which visually did not match the convention, left the viewer perplexed.

This was rewarded by Janina Niesobska, whose choreography brilliantly combined simplicity with an expressive visual conception of movement. The fourth act, in the casino, was the most interesting in this aspect. The frozen figures in dynamic poses, they became an element of the scenery, and then the sudden dynamic changes perfectly conveyed the fervour and chaos of the gambling place. Conductor Bassem Akiki also deserves a mention. He led the orchestra with lightness, which could be heard already in the first bars of the overture.

The director has gracefully combined elements that I have been missing from Polish opera houses for some time – classics, coherence of vision and at the same time its colourfulness. Flawless understanding of space, symmetry and simple treatments created a unique whole (which is not easy with such a number of collective scenes). This directorial concept combined with a stellar cast meant that the return of Manon could not fail.

For the first time in a long time, the production of Waldemar Zawodziński appeared on the stage in Wrocław. He used to visit Wrocław more often, with his team, i.e. Janina Niesobska (choreography) and Maria Balcerek (costumes). So it was known that the idea would be refined and colourful. And it is, quite surprisingly: when the curtain is raised, we see a kind of reflection of the opera house auditorium, with the same balconies and decoration.

Everything is thus taken, as it were, into an extra bracket. In order to bring other elements onto or off the stage, a part of this audience is raised and a stagecoach, furniture, a confessional (when Manon’s beloved, the Chevalier des Grieux, tries to forget her by putting the robes of a priest) or a carriage for transporting prisoners (carrying Manon) enters.

Antoine Prevost’s story of a simple girl, eager to enjoy the world and its wealth, but also a tender girl and the bachelor who falls head over heels in love with her, has inspired many opera (to mention Daniel Auber and Giacomo Puccini) and film artist; for Massenet, it was the first, that achieved success.

Popular all over the world, it has not been performed in Poland since 1979, so it is good that it has been recalled. Particularly notable in the premiere cast was MET star Charles Castronovo, brilliant in both voice and acting. The production returns in November and it is not yet known who will sing the role of des Grieux then, but the local cast of the other roles looks encouraging.

Gold and red fever

Love, betrayal, gambling, suffering – all because of the young and lovely Manon. The secret to her success is beauty. The story woven around the work of the 18th-century writer-priest Antoine François Prévost, which completely enthralled Jules Massenet. Is not a repertory opera hit in Poland. The last time the work was staged in the country was more than 40 years ago. ‘Manon’ returned to the posters of Wrocław Opera after 122 years at the end of the 2021/2022 artistic season.

Massenet’s story is not a simple one. Timeless stories, ‘rambling’ stories, are perhaps the most difficult to present, and ‘Manon’ is, after all, one of these. Moreover, Jules Massenet’s work is made up of different kinds of tissues, whose intricate weaving eludes unambiguousness. Waldemar Zawodziński (direction, stage design, lighting design) together with Maria Balcerek (costumes), Janina Niesobska (choreography) and Bassem Akiki have created a colourful performance, full of non-obviousness, perhaps to be seen over and over again.

The action is set in a theatre, deceptively reminiscent of the interior of the Wrocław Opera House, while the costumes are stylistically reminiscent of the early 20th century. Thus, the director doesn’t transfer the audience to past times, as he theatricalise the reality. This idea corresponds phenomenally with the musical layer of the work, in which old gavottes and minuets resound as a pastiche.

From the very first moments when Manon (Simona Mihai) appears, it is clear that this girl is going to be trouble…. A seemingly modest girl in a polite dress (after all, she was destined for a monastery), but somehow too pretty, too playful, and with a desire for the big world written all over her, which here, in the inn of Amiens, is a mere half-world. Manon gazes with envy and fascination at the half-undressed coquettes – Misses Poussette (Canan Kalkir), Javotte (Aleksandra Opała) and Rosette (Dorota Dutkowska). She is also open to new acquaintances, especially male ones. Fortunately, the vigilant Lescaut (Szymon Mechlinski) is nearby.

And he does not find it easy to tame his cousin’s temper. Excitement and bewilderment even pour out of Manon. All these heated emotions are brought together by the at once beautiful and whimsical aria ‘Je suis encor tout étourdie’. It requires great technical skills, and Simona Mihai undoubtedly possesses them. She conducted the breathless and excitedly giggly phrases in a successful manner. What I missed, however, was a certain brooding greed and delight that describe Manon. I smiled at the three ‘Graces’ instead. They had already aroused my sympathy when they rolled out of the stagecoach. Their ‘superciliousness’ as courtesans was unpretentiously convincing. The singers led their characters with a burlesque and expressive line. Szymon Mechlinski, on the other hand, endowed his Lescaut with a giddy drawl, marked by a sympathetic nondescript nature.

The orchestra, conducted by maestro Akiki, introduced the audience to the atmosphere of the second act with a love note. Massenet is indeed a master of leitmotifs, which brilliantly convey the variety of emotional states of the characters. I found myself listening to the orchestral dialogue of the main characters – the philosophical banter of the violins (Manon) and the low, ‘enchanted’ strings (Des Grieux). It must be said that Simona Mihai and Charles Castronovo have formed a harmonious duo. The artists have a natural feel for each other’s stage and musical pulse, so their singing of the magical power of a love spell sounded evocative. I must admit that from the second act onwards, my liking for Manon dropped considerably, and has remained so. I credit this to Simona Mihai, who convincingly managed to convey the true face of her heroine as a romantic but calculating lover. When des Grieux, in the sound of ‘En fermant les yeux’, melts dreamily at the thought of their shared cottage in the woods, Manon already has indifference written all over her face. At the level of stage marking, she slows down her movements, she is like a porcelain doll.

In the next act, the stage empties out, the table and the sofa of games disappear, and a statue of a young man enters triumphantly. I must admit that I don’t quite understand this statue. Perhaps it is a sign of the better world that Manon has chosen, her pass to freedom…. In a moment it will become crowded around the statue, because it is a promenade in the centre of Paris, where a great fete is taking place. And here the director Waldemar Zawodzinski reminds us that we are watching a theatrical “happening”. The promenade walkers move in slow motion as a sign that it doesn’t matter who they are, what they think and feel. They are mere figures, a backdrop for Manon. She, in the red dress, is now the queen of life. I will admit that Simona Mihai sang the glittering happiness of a successful woman gracefully. A gavotte requiring agility of voice, rich in difficult colouratura, she sounded radiant and limber.

The eyes of all are constantly turned to Manon, who at one point grows dreary. For she learns that her beloved wants to tie his future to the priestly state. The girl clearly loses her resonance. Even the ballet performance prepared especially for her by her lover Guillot does not make a special impression on her. Instead, it pleases the audience. For at the level of the text, we are served up delicious theatre within theatre – a pastiche of an 18th century minuet. The red figures dance, or rather wriggle in grotesque poses, and the statue also comes to life. Its movements also convey unease. In the scheme of the play, this dance is probably a projection of Manon’s tormented feelings and thoughts.

The second scene of the third act takes the action into the church. Des Grieux is surrounded by a garland of overbearing ladies, admirers of the young priest’s sermons. Here, in the church, he has already succeeded. Des Grieux, adored by his female parishioners, who reverently kiss the hem of his cassock, hides a nagging secret, a wound inflicted on him by Manon. Charles Castronovo masterfully manages to express the drama of an abandoned man seeking consolation, or rather escape, in God. From the aria ‘Je suis seul’, Castronovo has made a true introspective reflection of a man with an unstructured inner world. When the beloved appears in the church, the space of the two is filled with a strongly red light. Manon is contrite, but all the while aware of her active power over her former lover. Her multicoloured seduction has been planned by the director to emphasise this dominion. Manon, in a blood-red gown, stands over des Grieux, his hands suspended from a kneeler as if his body were spread over the arms of a cross. This scene evocatively reveals the entirety of des Grieux’s sacrifice. Manon the manipulative mystic kisses her lover, and des Grieux is ‘converted’ to the path of passion.

Act four takes the action to the casino. Everything glitters and drips with gold – gold are the dancers with gold chains on their nipples, gold masks hide the faces of the gentleman players. Suffice it to say that the interior of the Wrocław Opera House, its auditorium with an area of one hectare, is covered with 24 carat gold!

There is an amok in the air, but also an emptiness. Those gathered at the Hotel Transylvania are as if anaesthetised, present but absent, close to mannequins. Gambling reigns and oozes its venom, and Manon, carried on her arms by the dancers, is in her element. Accompanied by the three Graces, she sings a ‘paean’ to gold. Nothing has helped the visit of Father des Grieux (Alexander Zukhovich), who resolutely tries to convey his ‘memento’ – ‘I come to bring you out of your fall’. The space becomes empty. This is a scene of intensified tension, where the grey-blue, thick fog somehow particularly stirs the emotions.

The final act is a picture of misery and despair. The cart with the female prisoners rolls sadly along, with the emaciated Manon among them. There is no salvation for her. With her last breath, Manon asks her lover for forgiveness. Simona Mihai and Charles Castronovo’s final love duet was sung with searing heat. They left my emotions stirred.

Is it possible to be excited by Jules Massenet’s operatic work of Manon? Massenet’s arias have a remarkable plasticity of phrasing, every word has musical suppleness. Certainly, the opera abounds in many phrases that are tenderly delicate, the kind just right to listen to, motifs that my ear is inclined to include in a collection of ‘likes’. And the main character – did she fascinate and captivate me with her story? I mentioned earlier that I did not like the title character. I am not convinced by the usual portrayal of Manon as a torn, very complicated woman, and therefore fascinating. Nonsense! What does she have to offer besides sex appeal?

Her dilemmas are not of a moral nature, she is simply torn by the winds of passion. And another question – does Manon really want to be free (and what does that actually mean), does she want to be provided with all the pleasures to satisfy her capricious and perverse nature? In Massenet’s work, Manon’s name is used in all cases, and she spends 95 per cent of the performance on stage. However, it is not Manon that fascinates me, but des Grieux – his dedication, his magnanimity, his being to the end, despite the cruel ‘school of feeling’ inflicted upon him. And the other men in the story? Eh, it shames me to say…

Fusion of Horizons at Wroclaw Opera House

The Wroclaw Opera House crowns its season with a very successful performance. Jules Massenet’s Manon as staged by Waldemar Zawodziński is a well-conceived and perfectly realised performance.

Zawodziński, one of Poland’s most interesting creators of opera theatre, not only directs, but also designs the sets and lights himself. He is well educated. First he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, then he graduated in directing from the theatre school in Kraków, now proudly called the Academy. His productions are distinguished by strong visuals, smooth editing of scenes and good acting.

Above all, however, Zawodziński reads the text of the libretto with understanding and studies the score attentively. He does not try to make classical operas more interesting or modern by force. Rather, he tries to reveal their universal values and help the audience vividly receive the old masterpieces.

Staging Massenet’s opera Manon 136 years after its Paris premiere is a major challenge for a contemporary staging director. Romantic lyrical opera appeals to emotions rather than mind. The logic of events is sometimes secondary. The plot of the opera Manon goes more or less like this:

The girl is sixteen, the boy is not much older. They meet by chance at a stagecoach station. A poor family sends the girl to a convent. He studies philosophy. They fall in love with each other from the first impression, as teenagers do. They flee to Paris. In Paris, they live a poor life. He wants to marry and dreams of living in a white house, she thinks only of having fun and living in luxury. When the wealthy father kidnaps the boy, the girl does not resist. At the side of her new lover, she happily throws herself into the delightful life of the Parisian aristocracy. Four years pass. The boy, though abandoned, is unable to forget his great love. Out of despair, he becomes a priest. He delivers captivating sermons. He is famous and adored by his parishioners. The girl, now in her twenties, upon hearing about her former lover’s new career, realises that he is the love of her life. She seduces him once again. He gives in and she squanders his wealth and forces him to play cards, which of course leads to a tragic finale.

Staging companies often move Manon from the late 19th century to times more or less contemporary to themselves. Vincent Paterson has placed the action in post-war Paris (Berlin 2007), Olivier Py in the brothel district (Geneva 2016), David Bösch in contemporary flats (Hamburg 2021). Zawodzinski proposes his own original solution, surprisingly visually transportive.

In Wrocław, during the overture, a burgundy curtain reveals the audience balconies of a 19th century theatre on stage. Today’s audiences, seated on the balconies of a very similar space at the Wroclaw Opera House, are watching the premiere performance at the Paris theatre. The original audience, however, has “evaporated” from the balconies on stage. They are empty, although lights are occasionally switched on, and in the fourth act the lower balconies are briefly inhabited by the chorus.

The performance is played between two worlds, as in the German philosopher Hans Georg Gadamer’s ‘fusion of horizons’: any successful attempt to interpret a classical text or performance leads to a melding of two horizons: the historical and the contemporary. After all, a faithful reconstruction of a pre-premiere is impossible, and any attempt to treat the classics as a work expressing only the contemporary is anachronistic and false.

Placing the staging outside of time signals distance. We are, after all, in an opera house. It is a sanctuary of illusion and conventionality, a zone for the imaginative. In the first act, a giant stagecoach without horses stands on stage. This very capacious theatrical sign ingeniously organises the actors’ actions. The main theme of this act is travel, intended and unintended. The stagecoach stands still and thus becomes an ambiguous metaphor for human fate.

The vehicle also appears in the last act. This time it is a wooden police car transporting convicts to a colony in Louisiana. Human wreckage hangs from the windows. It is a bitter commentary on act one, filled with youthful vigour and hopes.

Zawodziński paints beautiful stage scenery with light. A simple change of lighting colour turns theatre balconies into a temple or even an altar. The collective scenes are magnificently composed. Each person in the chorus performs a precise task. The polyphony of movements builds excellent contexts for the soloists’ emotional arias and creates vivid worlds.

Janina Niesobska, an outstanding choreographer with a great artistic biography, not only gets along well with the director, but above all she hears Massenet’s music. The behaviour of the choristers seems to emanate from the sounds and rhythms played by the orchestra. The choreography of the ballet in the third act is downright thrilling. The dancers of Wroclaw Opera House never disappoint. This is a ballet ensemble of european class.

Maria Balcerek’s exquisite costumes perfectly complement the stage images composed by Zawodziński. Balcerek perfectly operates with colour. She designs clothes which function excellently in group scenes and make it very easy to follow the sometimes complex plot, and in ballet scenes they effectively enhance the expression of the dancers’ bodies.

The success of an opera depends, of course, on the soloists. In Saturday’s performance, the role of the main character, Manon Lescaut, was sung by Simona Mihai, a British soprano born in Bucharest. In the first act, she created an intriguing portrait of ‘teenage girl’ as a state of mind.

The part of Manon is extremely difficult. In each of the five acts, the heroine has a different identity. She is a naïve teenager, an energetic coquette, a fallen woman, a romantic diva, a great tragedian. Each of these characters establishes her current identity with a passionate aria. It is a bit regrettable that Simona Mihai, an outstanding singer, did not risk creating an in-depth portrait of the tragic femme fatale in the finale, but hid behind perfect musical form and stylised poses.

The star of the evening was the American lyric tenor Charles Castronovo, already known in Wrocław for Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffmann (2021). He has a strong voice with an enchanting timbre. As Le Chevalier des Grieux, the unhappy lover of Manon, he elicited enthusiastic reactions from the Wrocław Opera audience. Castronovo, a talented actor, made the romance between the Chevalier and Manon believable. He spectacularly suffered amorous torments.

The second hero of the evening was Szymon Mechlinski in the role of Lescaux, Manon’s cousin. He has a wonderful voice and, like Castronovo, great acting talent. He created a harrowing study of a demoralised man, a gambler and an alcoholic.

Grzegorz Szostak, on the other hand, made the character of the Chevalier des Grieux’s father credible. Endowed with a beautiful bass voice and natural charisma, Szostak built a multi-dimensional portrait of an aristocrat concerned about his son’s fate.

Canan Kalkir in the role of Poussette proved once again that she has a wonderful voice with a unique timbre. Simona Mihai made her debut years ago in the opera Manon precisely as Poussette. Maybe this is a good sign and we will soon see a staging with Kalkir in the leading role.

A separate comment needs to be made about the excellent orchestra under the baton of Bassem Akiki, one of the trio of directors of Wrocław Opera. Akiki radicalised the emotional message of the opera. The climactic scenes were almost like a Napalm Death concert. The powerful volume was strongly moving, but at times also drowned out the lyricism of this famous “lyrical opera”. I thought with admiration and empathy about the musicians, enclosed in a cramped orchestrion. The flashing sequins on the conductor’s jacket distracted even me.

Waldemar Zawodzinski has made Manon a fascinating and sophisticated spectacle. It is worth diving into this world out of time to experience the fusion of horizons and feel the astonishing emotional power of romantic opera.

A love from which you cannot escape

The Wroclaw Opera closes its season by presenting Massenet’s Manon, not seen on Polish stages for over forty years. For the role of the Chevalier des Grieux, the Opera has managed to invite an artist who has not descended from the top of the opera Olympus for years – Charles Castronovo. The American tenor visited Wroclaw for the umpteenth time, having previously taken part in the opening concerts of the 2020/21 season and Offenbach’s ‘Tales of Hoffmann’ broadcast online during the pandemic. This time he arrived without his spouse, Russian soprano Ekaterina Siurina, who was replaced in the title role by Romanian-born Simona Mihai.

It is undoubtedly thanks to the efforts of Mariusz Kwiecień, artistic director of the Wrocław Opera House, who is looking for singers of the highest calibre, that we can see artists with such an oeuvre as Charles Castronovo, Aleksandra Kurzak, who sang in “Freelance” in the autumn, Ambrogio Maestri and Lianna Haroutounian, whom we remember from “Tosca”, or Kristine Opolais in “Madam Butterfly”. Next season, the capital of Lower Silesia will welcome, among others, Erwin Schrott, Marina Rebeka and Ewa Płonka, who has recently conquered the world’s stages. Warsaw can only be envious 🙂 I am referring here to the Warsaw audience, because it seems that for the decision-makers of the National Opera the casts of the performances are of secondary, if not tertiary importance.

“Manon” is a story of passionate and tragic love. The Chevalier des Grieux falls in love with Manon Lescaut, whom he meets by chance and whose family wants to give her to a convent. Together they flee to Paris, where they lead an ordinary life. However, the girl prioritises material status over personal happiness and becomes involved with older gentlemen from the upper classes. The reunion of the former lovers sets off an avalanche of unfortunate events. Des Grieux forgives Manon and renounces the priestly ordination he was willing to accept in order to forget his love disappointment. In order to get the money to live at the level to which the girl is accustomed, he decides to try his luck at cards and, having won, is accused of cheating. Thanks to the intervention of his father, des Grieux gets out of jail, but Manon is sentenced to deportation to America. When the chevalier and the girl’s cousin come to her aid, it turns out that the rescue comes too late and Manon dies in the arms of her lover.

The Wrocław staging directed by Waldemar Zawodziński is based on the convention of “theatre within a theatre”, however, the decorations in the form of reproduction of the auditorium of the Wrocław Opera House are practically not used in the course of the stage action. The rich set design and costumes, as well as the intense lighting, at times give the impression of overloading the small theatre stage.

The premiere performance, however, was immensely satisfying in musical terms. Charles Castronovo embodied the character of the Chevalier des Grieux with extraordinary passion and commitment. It is evident that this is an artist who has a well-crafted conception of the character and is very comfortable with the french repertoire. The American singer has a lovely, dark, almost baritone voice, and he also leads the phrasing beautifully.

Simona Mihai as the titular Manon also tried to portray the character’s emotions of being torn between her desire to be loved by the Chevalier des Grieux and her strenuous desire for independence, glamour and wealth. Szymon Mechlinski in the role of the protagonist’s cousin Lescaut came off very well. He is a light-hearted man who, along with his fellow soldiers, wants to spend money on fun and women, for which he takes advantage of Manon’s position in the big world. The supporting characters were also expressive, with Grzegorz Szostak as the Count des Grieux, Alexander Zuchowicz as Guillot de Morfontaine and Sergii Borzov as de Bretigny. 

Bassem Akiki, leading the orchestra, attentively accentuated the details of the score, without forgetting about passions and emotions.

W minioną sobotę, tuż po spektaklu Manon, uroczyście podziękowaliśmy pani Barbarze Żarejko, członkini Orkiestry Opery Wrocławskiej, za 42 lata pracy w naszej instytucji. Nasz Pracownik, a zarazem serdeczna Koleżanka, przechodzi na zasłużoną emeryturę.

Pani Barbaro, dziękujemy za Pani pracę, talent, oddanie oraz dobrą energię, którą roztaczała Pani wokół siebie każdego dnia. Jesteśmy niezwykle wdzięczni za Pani wkład w tworzenie historii naszej opery – dziękujemy za każdy spektakl, za każdy koncert, podczas których grała Pani na altówce. Wielu naszych pracowników będzie pewnie tęsknić za ciastem orzechowym, które piekła Pani co roku z okazji Barbórki 😉

Mrs Barbara Żarejko is retiring!

Last Saturday, just after the performance of Manon, we solemnly thanked Mrs Barbara Żarejko, a member of the Wrocław Opera Orchestra, for the 42 years of work in our institution. Our employee and warm-hearted colleague is taking a well-deserved retirement.

Mrs Żarejko, thank you for your work, your talent, your dedication and the good energy you spread around you every day. We are extremely grateful for your contribution to the history of our opera house – thank you for your performances, for the concerts during which you played the viola. Many of our staff will probably miss the walnut cake you used to bake every year on the occasion of Barbórka 😉 .

Mrs Żarejko, you are about to embark on a well-deserved retirement – we wish you a good rest and time that you can use to pursue your passions and spend quality time with your loved ones.

And good health, of course.

Jeśli chcesz być świadkiem materializacji słowa piękno, zobacz ten spektakl. Dzięki porywającym głosom, wspaniałej muzyce Pucciniego i żywej prezentacji ta opera zaprowadzi Cię prosto do muzycznego nieba.

To 118-letnie arcydzieło należące do tradycji weryzmu przedstawia świat z większym realizmem. W ramach tego nurtu opera ta nie jest oparta na królach, królowych czy bogach, ale na przeciętnych mężczyznach i kobietach z ich problemami. Oparta jest na opowiadaniu Johna Luthera Longa, które zostało zainspirowane prawdziwą historią.

Zacznę od większego obrazu. Scenografia (autorstwa Williama Orlandiego) jest ciemna, szara, jakby rdzawa i zakurzona, co doskonale oddaje charakter czarno-białego filmu. Kostiumy (zaprojektowane również przez Orlandiego) są również ciemnoszare, a oglądanie bezbarwnych obrazów daje nową perspektywę. Dodano jeden kolor – czerwone kwiaty – który nadaje im jeszcze większą moc, symbolizując siłę emocji.

Pokochasz tę muzykę – jest dynamiczna, żywa, odświętna i orzeźwiająca. Jest w niej coś bardzo lekkiego i naturalnego. Orkiestra pod wspaniałą dyrekcją Bassema Akiki zapewnia niezapomnianą podróż do muzycznego raju.

W pierwszym akcie jest wiele pięknych pieśni miłosnych (w końcu chodzi o miłość), jest w nich delikatność i wrażliwość. Madame Butterfly (świetna Kristine Opolais) pozostawia nas bez słów. Jej kreacja w pierwszym akcie jest delikatna jak płatki kwiatów. Jest krucha i naiwna, przepełniona miłością i wiarą. Chcesz ją przytulić, bo wiesz, że ta historia skończy się tragicznie, bo jest tak niezaprzeczalnie słodka i niewinna (no cóż, w końcu ma 15 lat).

 Akt drugi jest inny, trzy lata później, niegdyś piękna panna młoda jest teraz chwiejna, jej delikatność zamieniła się w bezbronność pełną smutku i bezgranicznej nadziei. Jest nieszczęśliwa, ale skromna i niewiarygodnie cierpliwa. Kristine doskonale wciela się w tę postać, jest “Madame Butterfly” i ma nieskończoną władzę nad jej osobowością. Odczytywanie jej emocji jest tak proste, że są one doskonale widoczne i wydają się płynąć przez nią. Jest naturalna. Jej interpretacja jest niesamowita, kolorowała przestrzeń nutami i tonami i pozwalała im płynąć. W bardzo niezwykły sposób sprawia, że czujemy jej emocje, a są one silne. To bardzo poruszające.

W spektaklu są jeszcze inne wspaniałe role, jak Suzuki (efektowna Monika Ledzion-Porczyńska), energiczny Goro (Aleksander Zuchowicz), elegancki Sharpless (Marcin Bronikowski) i książę Yamadori (szykowny Łukasz Rosiak), a na koniec Pinkerton grany przez Tadeusza Szlenkiera. On też jest niesamowity. Jego śpiew jest jak prażony orzech laskowy, gęsty, orzechowy, chrupiący na zewnątrz, trochę dymny i oleisty w środku. Przekonał mnie do siebie całkowicie i uwielbiałam każdą chwilę jego występu.

Ten spektakl jest jak oldschoolowy czarno-biały film ze wspaniałą, żywą muzyką i naprawdę nie wiem, co jest w nim najlepsze – niesamowite głosy, muzyka czy scenografia. To wszystko tworzy idealne połączenie spektaklu, który na długo pozostanie w pamięci.

 

Review: MADAME BUTTERFLY at Opera Wroclaw

It was just amazing

If you want to witness the materialization of the word beauty, see this show. With thrilling voices, amazing Puccini music, and vital presentation this opera will lead you straight to musical heaven.

This 118-year-old masterpiece being part of verismo tradition portrays the world with greater realism. As a part of the movement, this opera is not based on kings, queens, or gods, but the average man and woman with their problems. It is based on a short story written by John Luther Long, which is inspired by a real story.

I will start with the greater picture. The scenography (by William Orlandi) is dark, grey, kind of rust, and dusty, which is a perfect way to make the scene a black and white movie. Costumes (designed also by Orlandi) are as well dark/grey and looking at colorless pictures gives a new perspective. There is one color added – red flowers – and it gives them even more power symbolizing the power of emotions. 

You will love the music, it’s dynamic, lively, bright, festive, and refreshing. There is something very light and natural in it. The orchestra conducted greatly by Bassem Akiki gives an unforgettable trip to a musical paradise.

The first act has a lot of beautiful love songs (it’s all about love after all), and there is a delicacy and vulnerability. Madame Butterfly (great Kristine Opolais) leaves us speechless. Her creation in the first act is tender as petals of flowers. She’s fragile and naive, filled with love and faith. You want to hug her because you know that the story will end tragically as she’s so undeniably sweet and innocent (well, after all, she’s 15 years old). Act two is different, three years later, the once beautiful bride is now shaky, her delicacy turned into vulnerability filled with sadness and infinite hope. She’s miserable but humble and incredibly patient. Kristine leads the character with perfection, she is THE Madame Butterfly, and she has endless power over the personality. She makes reading her emotions so easy, it’s perfectly clear and seems like they are flowing through her. She’s a natural. Her interpretation is incredible, she was coloring the space with notes and tones et let them go. In a very unusual way, she makes us feel her emotions, and they are strong. It’s highly moving.

The play has other magnificent parts like Suzuki (striking Monika Ledzion-Porczynska), energetic Goro (Aleksander Zuchowicz), elegant Sharpless (Marcin Bronikowski) and Prince Yamadori (chic Lukasz Rosiak) and last but not least the Pinkerton played by Tadeusz Szlenkier. He’s also incredible. His singing is like roasted hazelnut, thick, nutty, crunchy on the outside, a little smoky and oily on the inside. He convinced me totally and I loved every single moment of his performance.

This play is like old-school black and white movie with great, vibrant music and I really don’t know what the best part is – amazing voices, music, or scenography. It makes a perfect combination of a show that will stay with you for a long time.

Wywiad z Charlesem Castronovo

Grał pan w Fauście i w Opowieściach Hoffmanna, był pan Romeo w Romeo i Julii Gounoda, Nadirem w Poławiaczach pereł Bizeta i Don José w Carmen, wreszcie Kawalerem des Grieux w Manon Masseneta. W czym tkwi duch opery francuskiej? 

Francuskie role dla tenorowych śpiewaków wyróżnia to, że zazwyczaj tassitura jest trochę wyższa. Wyjątkowa pod tym względem jest partia Don José w Carmen — tam dominująca skala głosu jest trochę niższa. Repertuar francuski jest wyzwaniem dla tenorów — to mieszanka czystego liryzmu i dramatyzmu, przy czym niezwykle ważne jest zachowanie elegancji. Liryczne sekcje pianissimo przeplatają się z dramatycznymi. Opera może być dramatyczna, emocjonalna, namiętna, wrażliwa, ale opera francuska zawsze będzie elegancka — nawet przy największym natężeniu namiętności nie znajdziemy w niej weryzmu.

Historia związku Kawalera des Grieux i Manon to nie tylko opowieść o tragicznej miłości. Bohaterowie są uwikłani w konwenanse, wpadają w moralne pułapki, wchodzą na drogi, których być może nigdy by nie wybrali, gdyby mieli lepszą sytuację materialną… Jak pan interpretuje tę historię?

Manon i des Grieux są ofiarami swoich czasów. Nie mają tylu praw i możliwości, którymi dysponuje współczesny człowiek, który w większości rozwiniętych państw ma prawo wyboru różnych ścieżek życia. W przypadku Manon znaczenie ma też jej charakter i tu czasy nie mają wpływu. Ta bohaterka jest materialistką; pragnie ekscytacji, adrenaliny, pośpiechu, chce próbować nowych rzeczy. Jest zmienna i w nic nie angażuje się do końca. Nawet jeżeli kocha des Grieux, to jest na tyle kapryśna, że nie trwa przy nim długo, a potem jest już za późno… A des Grieux, wydaje się nie być typowym młodym mężczyzną. Jest bardzo oddany Manon — robi dla niej naprawdę szalone rzeczy. Myślę, że w dzisiejszych czasach zostałby nazwany zaprzeczeniem samca alfa. Podejmuje najgorsze decyzje, byleby tylko być z Manon — uważam to za błąd. Doceniam jego miłość i oddanie, jednak on zapomina o sobie. Gdyby żył współcześnie mógłby opuścić tę kobietę, mówiąc: „Bardzo dziękuję, ale nie chcę mieć z tym wszystkim nic wspólnego” — przecież ona miała na niego zły wpływ! Des Grieux nie zażył w porę tzw. czerwonej pigułki, by móc się obudzić i zrozumieć, że nie powinien poświęcać się dla kobiety takiej jak Manon.

Wynika z tego, że miłość może być naprawdę destrukcyjną siłą.

Tak, absolutnie tak uważam. Miłość des Grieux do Manon gubi go — on tak naprawdę niszczy samego siebie, możliwe jego wybory negatywnie wpływają na jego rodzinę, choć nie sądzę by był złą osobą. Manon zna jego słabości, wie że jest wierny i wykorzystuje to, aby sprawować nad nim władzę w destrukcyjny sposób.

Czy łatwo odczuć empatię do takiej postaci jak des Grieux?

Współczuję mu. Wbrew sobie i pomimo wątpliwości stara się służyć Manon. Nie tylko chce być z nią fizycznie i emocjonalnie, ale chce też zapewnić ją o swoim uczuciu i robi wszystko, co w swojej mocy, by była szczęśliwa. Ta sytuacja jest dla niego ogromnym ciężarem — byłby znacznie szczęśliwszy, gdyby ich życie było prostsze: pozbawione zbytków, gdyby żyli w niewielkim mieszkaniu i spędzali czas na wspólnych posiłkach i spacerach. Taki model związku przyniósłby mu największy pokój serca. Myślę, że większość mężczyzn rozumie, co mam na myśli: w pewnym wieku to, czego naprawdę chcesz, to po prostu spokój. Porywy namiętności już nie są najważniejsze, a bardziej liczy się poczucie bezpieczeństwa, miłość, wsparcie, po prostu wspólne życie. To jedna z najlepszych rzeczy, która może się przytrafić. Ale doceniam oddanie des Grieux, powiedziałbym nawet, że je rozumiem. Często nasze własne szczęście zależy od troski o innych ludzi. 

Występował pan już w roli Kawalera des Grieux — czy dostrzega pan ewolucję tej postaci w swojej interpretacji? 

Około 10 lat temu debiutowałem w tej roli roli w Théâtre du Capitole w Tuluzie, a partnerowała mi niesamowita śpiewaczka Natalie Dessay, która przechodziła wówczas na emeryturę. To była jej ostatnia Manon, właściwie ostatnia rola operowa. Mieliśmy dość długi okres prób, zaśpiewaliśmy wspólnie sześć spektakli, które okazały się ogromnym sukcesem. Ciężko pracowałem nad tą rolą i oczywiście nad moim francuskim — chciałem, by był doskonały. 

Przyznam, że po tylu latach i śpiewaniu tylu rodzajów ról, wciąż się uczę. Co więcej, doznałem też swojego rodzaju olśnienia. Powiedziałem sobie: „Na tym etapie życia potrzebujesz zarówno młodzieńczego liryzmu, elegancji, jak i dojrzałości”. Słychać ją już dzisiaj w moim głosie i dzięki temu mogę sprawniej uchwycić niektóre z tych ważniejszych momentów tego dzieła, nadać roli o wiele więcej głębi.

Wychował się pan w południowej Kalifornii. Pana ojciec jest Sycylijczykiem, matka pochodzi z Ekwadoru. W jakim stopniu pańskie pochodzenie wpływa na podejście do muzyki?

Moi rodzice przyjechali do Stanów Zjednoczonych w odstępie zaledwie kilku lat. Ojciec miał może 16 lat, tak samo moja matka. Poznali się i pobrali w Nowym Jorku, tam też się urodziłem, jednak po kilku latach przenieśliśmy się do Kalifornii. Genetyczna tęsknota za ciepłymi krajami nie pozwoliła wytrwać wielu mroźnych nowojorskich zim. Co ciekawe, w mojej rodzinie w ogóle nie ma muzyków. Mam wprawdzie dalekiego kuzyna, który grał na skrzypcach, ale to wszystko. Mój ojciec często opowiadał historię o moim dziadku, który miał trzy córki i jednego syna, i zawsze pytał: „Dlaczego nie mam w rodzinie jednego piosenkarza? Nawet jednego? Kocham muzykę i śpiewanie! Dlaczego nikt z was nie śpiewa?” Niestety zmarł, zanim dorosłem na tyle, by rozpocząć karierę, mam więc nadzieję, że usłyszał mnie z innego miejsca, gdziekolwiek teraz jest. Na szczęście moja babcia kilka razy słyszała, jak śpiewam w Metropolitan Opera. Ze strony rodziny mojej mamy również nie ma żadnych muzyków, więc cała moja muzyczna przygoda była jedną wielką eksploracją, odkrywaniem siebie. Odkąd byłem dzieckiem występowałem, tańczyłem — jako nastolatek grałem w zespole rockowym, uwielbiałem śpiewać. Kiedy odkryłem operę, okazało się, że mój głos naturalnie się w niej odnajduje — podobnie miałem z innym gatunkiem muzycznym — z rock’n’rollem, nadal go kocham! W muzyce i śpiewaniu kieruję się instynktem, czerpię z tego co jest we mnie, może to przeznaczenie. 

Wróćmy na chwilę do Francji. Czy w pana przypadku język, w którym pan śpiewa wpływa na trudność roli?

Uważam, że język ma bezpośredni wpływ na podejście do śpiewu. Niektórzy twierdzą, że to nie ma znaczenia, że nadal śpiewasz tak samo, co jest w zasadzie prawdą, ale są duże różnice np. między językiem włoskim, francuskim i niemieckim. Francuski był dla mnie zawsze najłatwiejszym językiem do śpiewania i bardzo zależało mi na poprawności, ponieważ śpiewałem bardzo dużo francuskiego repertuaru. Wiele razy też śpiewałem we Francji i wielokrotnie słyszałem od współpracowników, recenzentów i reżyserów, że mój francuski jest doskonały. Ten język jest dla mnie trochę bardziej subtelny niż inne i nie jest tak trudny w wymowie jak np. włoski.

To nie jest pana pierwszy występ w Operze Wrocławskiej, czy lubi pan tu wracać?

Uwielbiam Wrocław. Miałem okazję występować tu na kilku koncertach galowych, a także w Opowieściach Hoffmanna — bardzo podobała mi się ta produkcja. Rola była bardzo wymagająca, również po francusku, niemniej świetnie się bawiłem. Jakość produkcji i praca śpiewaków były na bardzo wysokim poziomie, m.in. dzięki dyrektorowi artystycznemu. Mariusz Kwiecień i ja uczyliśmy się razem w Lindemann Young Artists Development Program w Metropolitan Opera. Był on pierwszym polskim śpiewakiem, jakiego poznałem — bardzo utalentowanym. Czas wspólnej nauki wspominam wspaniale
i do dziś pozostajemy dobrymi przyjaciółmi, a znamy się od ponad 20 lat! Oczywistym było dla mnie przyjąć propozycję występu na deskach Opery Wrocławskiej. Świetny teatr, bardzo dobra akustyka, a sam Wrocław jest naprawdę urokliwy i macie tu świetne jedzenie… Opera Wrocławska ma też doskonałą kubaturę, można zagrać bardzo szczegółowo, a ludzie to zauważą. Czujesz, że możesz zaryzykować i zaśpiewać naprawdę pianissimo, a gdy jest taka potrzeba dać z siebie pełną moc głosu. To naprawdę komfortowe miejsce — świetne do wypróbowania nowych ról, jestem tu zrelaksowany, spokojny i pewny siebie. Wracam tu z przyjemnością!

You played in Faust and in Tales of Hoffmann. You were Romeo in Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet, Nadir in Bizet’s Pearl Catchers and Don José in Carmen and, finally, the Chevalier des Grieux in Massenet’s Manon. What is the spirit of French opera?

French roles for tenor singers are distinguished by the fact that the tessitura is usually a little higher. The part of Don José in Carmen is exceptional in this respect — there, the dominant voice scale is a little lower. The French repertoire is a challenge for tenors — it is a mixture of pure lyricism and drama, with elegance being extremely important. Lyrical pianissimo sections alternate with the dramatic ones. Opera can be dramatic, emotional, passionate, and sensitive. However, French opera will always be elegant — even with the highest level of passion, you will not find verismo.

The story of the relationship between the Chevalier des Grieux and Manon is not just a tale of tragic love. The characters are entangled in conventions, fall into moral traps and embark on paths they might never have chosen if they were better off materially… How do you interpret this story?

Manon and des Grieux are victims of their time. They do not have as many rights and opportunities available to modern humans, who — in most developed countries — have the right to choose different paths in life. In the case of Manon, her character also matters and, here, times have no impact. This character is a materialist; she craves excitement, adrenaline, and rush; she wants to try new things. She is volatile and does not fully commit to anything. Even if she loves des Grieux, she is capricious enough that she does not last long with him and then it is too late… Moreover, des Grieux, it seems, is not a typical young man. He is very devoted to Manon — he does really crazy things for her. I think he would be called a denial of the alpha male these days. He makes the worst decisions just to be with Manon. I think that is a mistake. I appreciate his love and devotion. However, he forgets himself. If he were alive today, he could leave this woman saying: “Thank you very much, but I do not want anything to do with all this”. After all, she had a bad influence on him! Des Grieux did not take the so-called red pill in time to wake up and realise that he should not sacrifice himself for a woman like Manon.

It follows that love can be a truly destructive force.

Yes, I absolutely think so. Des Grieux’s love for Manon loses him — he actually destroys himself, and his possible choices negatively affect his family, although I do not think he is a bad person. Manon knows his weaknesses; she knows he is faithful and uses this to exercise her power over him in destructive ways.

Is it easy to feel empathy for a character like des Grieux?

I feel sorry for him. Against himself and despite his doubts, he tries to serve Manon. Not only does he want to be with her physically and emotionally but he also wants to assure her of his affection and does everything he can to make her happy. This situation is a huge burden for him. He would be much happier if their lives were simpler: devoid of excesses, if they lived in a small apartment and spent time eating and walking together. This model of relationship would bring him the greatest peace of heart. I think most men understand what I mean: at a certain age, what you really want is just peace and quiet. Spurts of passion are no longer the most important thing; what matters more is a sense of security, love, support and simply living together. This is one of the best things that can happen to you. However, I appreciate des Grieux’s dedication; I would even say I understand it. Often, our own happiness depends on taking care of other people. 

You have already performed the role of the Chevalier des Grieux. Do you see an evolution of this character in your interpretation? 

About ten years ago, I made my debut in this role at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse and I was partnered by the amazing singer Natalie Dessay, who was retiring at the time. It was her last Manon, actually her last operatic role. We had quite a long rehearsal period and we sang six shows together, which were a huge success. I worked hard on this role and, of course, on my French — I wanted it to be perfect.

I have to admit that after so many years of singing so many types of roles, I am still learning. Moreover, I also experienced a kind of enlightenment. I said to myself: „At this stage of life, you need both youthful lyricism, elegance and maturity”. You can already hear it in my voice today and it allows me to capture some of the more important moments of the piece more efficiently, to give the role much more depth.

You grew up in Southern California. Your father is Sicilian and your mother is from Ecuador. To what extent does your background influence your approach to music?

My parents came to the United States just a few years apart. My father was maybe sixteen, and so was my mother. They met and married in New York City, where I was born but, after a few years, we moved to California. A genetic longing for warm countries prevented him from enduring many cold New York winters. Interestingly, there are no musicians in my family at all. I do have a distant cousin who played the violin, but that is all. My father often told a story about my grandfather, who had three daughters and one son and always asked: „Why don’t I have one singer in my family? Even one? I love music and singing! Why aren’t any of you singing?”. Unfortunately, he died before I was old enough to start my career so I hope he heard me from somewhere else, wherever he is now. Fortunately, my grandmother heard me sing at the Metropolitan Opera several times. There are no musicians on my mom’s side of the family either so my whole musical adventure has been one big exploration, self-discovery. Ever since I was a kid, I have been performing and dancing. As a teenager, I played in a rock band and I loved to sing. When I discovered opera, I found that my voice naturally found its way into it. I had the same experience with another musical genre — rock’n’roll. I still love it! In music and singing, I follow my instincts, I draw from what is inside me, maybe it is destiny.

Let us go back to France for a moment. In your case, does the language in which you sing affect the difficulty of the role?

I believe that language has a direct impact on the approach to singing. Some people say that it does not matter that you still sing the same, which is basically true. However, there are significant differences between, for example, Italian, French and German. French was always the easiest language for me to sing and I was very concerned with correctness because I sang much French repertoire. I have also sung in France many times and have heard many times from colleagues, reviewers and directors that my French is excellent. I find this language a little more subtle than others and not as difficult to pronounce as, for example, Italian.

This is not your first performance in Wroclaw Opera. Do you like coming back here?

I love Wroclaw. I have had the opportunity to perform in several gala concerts here as well as in Tales of Hoffmann. I really enjoyed that production. The role was very demanding, also in French, but I had a great time. The quality of the production and the work of the singers were of a very high standard, thanks in part to the artistic director. Mariusz Kwiecień and I studied together in the Lindemann Young Artists Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera. He was the first Polish singer I met. He is very talented. I have great memories of our time studying together and we have remained good friends to this day. We have known each other for over twenty years! It was obvious for me to accept the proposal to perform at Wrocław Opera. It is a great theatre with very good acoustics and Wrocław itself is really charming and you have great food here… Wrocław Opera also has an excellent volume; you can play in great detail and people will notice it. You feel like you can take a chance and sing really pianissimo and give the full power of your voice when needed. It is a really comfortable place — great for trying out new roles. I am relaxed, calm and confident here. It is a pleasure to come back here!

Informacja od dyrektor Opery Wrocławskiej Haliny Ołdakowskiej

Szanowni Państwo,

w dniu 27 maja w lokalnym wrocławskim dodatku do „Gazety Wyborczej” ukazał się artykuł powołujący się na wyniki kontroli w Operze Wrocławskiej, które nie pochodzą z ostatecznego raportu kontroli. W artykule znalazły się nieścisłości i aby zapobiec ich ewentualnemu rozpowszechnianiu wyjaśniamy najważniejsze z nich.

„Gazeta Wyborcza” twierdzi, że Opera Wrocławska zakończyła rok 2021 z wynikiem minus 3,8 mln zł nazywając go długiem, sugerując tym samym, że instytucja zalega z regulowaniem swoich zobowiązań. Tymczasem Opera Wrocławska nie ma długów – stan zobowiązań wymagalnych na 31 grudnia 2021 wynosił 0 zł, a wynik ujemny 3,8 mln zł wynika z faktu, iż rozliczenie części przychodów uzyskanych w 2021 roku przypadło na rok następny. Opera utrzymała i utrzymuje płynność finansową i reguluje swoje zobowiązania na bieżąco.

Ponadto w I kwartale 2022 roku został wygenerowany wynik dodatni wbrew temu, co czytamy w artykule. Zgodnie z meldunkami finansowymi wszystkie trzy miesiące pierwszego kwartału 2022 roku miały wynik dodatni, a I kwartał zakończył się w Operze Wrocławskiej z prawie 300 tysiącami zł na plusie. Tymczasem w artykule w „Gazecie Wyborczej” czytamy, że wynik za I kwartał tego roku jest ujemny.

O otwartej linii w bankowym rachunku bieżącym organizator jest powiadamiany w comiesięcznych sprawozdaniach. Dyrektor zaciąga zobowiązania w ramach ustawowych uprawnień, a taka linia jest takim samym zobowiązaniem jak każde inne, co jest naturalne w sytuacji, w której Opera Wrocławska ma zadanie samodzielnie wypracowywać 30 proc. swojego budżetu.

Jednocześnie przy tej okazji informujemy, że od grudnia 2021 roku pracownicy Opery Wrocławskiej otrzymują wyrównania i podwyżki wynagrodzeń. Dzięki staraniom dyrekcji budżet na wynagrodzenia wzrósł o 1/5 w 2022 roku.

Podniesienie budżetu na płace pracowników Opery Wrocławskiej w roku 2022 oznacza, że:

  • każdy pracownik pracujący na etacie będzie otrzymywał pensję podstawową w wysokości przewyższającej płacę minimalną, tj. obecnie 3010 zł brutto, przy czym najniższe wynagrodzenie jest wyższe o 600 zł od tej kwoty
  • zostały zlikwidowane kominy płacowe na tych samych stanowiskach, a niektóre stanowiska zostały na nowo wycenione
  • średnia kwota regulacji wyniosła 767 zł, a pracownicy artystyczni otrzymali średnio 901 zł.

Artykuł taki jak ten w „Gazecie Wyborczej” nie tylko niszczy dobre imię Opery Wrocławskiej, ale też wywołuje nieuzasadniony strach o przyszłość pracowników i naszej instytucji. Publikacja niestety jest efektem braku umiejętności czytania sprawozdań finansowych oraz podstawowej wiedzy związanej z budżetem instytucji kultury.

Zapewniam Państwa, że sytuacja jest stabilna i nie ma zagrożenia dla dalszej działalności Opery Wrocławskiej. Po pandemii i związanymi z nią ograniczonymi możliwościami uzyskiwania przychodów, dzięki pracy nas wszystkich, nasz teatr szybko wychodzi na prostą. 

Większość z nas skupia się na budowaniu dobrego imienia Opery Wrocławskiej i rozwoju artystycznym za co ogromnie Państwu dziękuję.

Dear Sirs,

On May 27th, the local Wrocław supplement to “Gazeta Wyborcza” published an article citing the results of the audit of the Wrocław Opera House that do not come from the final audit report. The article contains inaccuracies and in order to prevent their possible distribution, we explain the most important ones.

“Gazeta Wyborcza” claims that Wrocław Opera ended the year 2021 with a result of minus 3.8 million zlotys calling it a debt, thus suggesting that the institution is not paying its obligations. In fact, Wrocław Opera has no debts – the balance of liabilities due as of 31 December 2021 amounted to PLN 0. The negative result of PLN 3.8 million results from the fact that the settlement of a part of revenues obtained in 2021 fell in the following year. The Opera has maintained and is maintaining liquidity and is paying its liabilities on a current basis.

Moreover, a positive result was generated in Q1 of 2022 contrary to what it’s stated in the article. According to the financial reports, all three months of the first quarter of 2022 had a positive result, and the first quarter ended with almost PLN 300 000 of profit. Meanwhile, the article in “Gazeta Wyborcza” says that the result for the first quarter of this year is negative.

The Organizer of the Wrocław Opera is informed about the overdraft facility opened in the bank by the opera in its monthly reports. The director incurs liabilities within the scope of his statutory powers, and such a line is the same liability as any other, which is natural in the situation where Wrocław Opera is supposed to work out 30% of its budget on its own.

At the same time, we would like to take this opportunity to inform you that starting from December 2021, employees of the Wrocław Opera are receiving compensation and salary increases. Thanks to the management’s efforts, the budget for salaries in 2022 has been increased by 1/5.

Increased salary budget for Wrocław Opera employees in 2022 means that:

– every full-time employee will receive a basic salary that exceeds the polish minimum salary, i.e. currently PLN 3010 gross, while the lowest salary is PLN 600 higher than that amount

– pay stacks on the same positions have been eliminated and some positions have been newly valued

– the average adjustment of the salary amounted to PLN 767 and artistic workers received an average of PLN 901 raise.

Such articles like one in “Gazeta Wyborcza” not only damages the good name of the Wroclaw Opera House but also creates unjustified fear for the future of the employees and our institutions. This publication is the result of a lack of skills in reading financial statements and lack of basic knowledge of the budgets in polish cultural institution.

I can assure you that the situation of the Wrocław Opera House is stable and there is no threat to the continued operation. After the pandemic and the related limited revenue opportunities, thanks to the work of all of us, our theater is quickly getting back on tracks. 

The majority of us are focused on building the good name of the Wrocław Opera House and artistic development, for which I thank you all so much.
